Important Precautions When Using PIP Implants for Breast Enlargement Surgery

Getting a breast enlargementsurgery does not only involve choosing the best surgeon to do the procedure but it also entails getting the right kind of bust implants. Since there are many types and brands of implants available in the market, it’s essential that patients are aware that some of these breast implants are not safe for their body. Example of this is the PIP (Poly Implant Prothese implants) which is a low-priced French brand. Due to its economical price, PIP has become a favorite implant to use amongst many cosmetic surgery branches in United Kingdom.

Unfortunately, the board members of BAAPS (British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) are vocal about their discontentment on the low-grade quality of PIP implants. A study made by the AFSSAPS (the French Competence Authority) also revealed that PIP implants have:

  • An extremely high leakage rate
  • The implants shells are extraordinarily weak
  • Patient’s (those who have the PIP implants) Genotoxicity cannot be determined

Compared to the current types of implants used for breast enlargement surgery, PIP implants are not made from durable, multi-layers of shell. Due to having only a singular layer, these implants are no doubt feeble if utilized in a bust augmentation surgery. Moreover, the silicone found on PIP is not at par with the accepted standards for breast implants.

The BAAPS also warned that there’s a possibility that patients may experience inflammatory reactions if they use PIP implants. This irritation which occurs when silicone are leaking does not happen in today’s kinds of implants. More studies are being conducted on the latest finding that the gel of the PIP implants may also ruin the DNA of the cells. BAAPS also shared that this French brand of breasts silicone sometimes brings rashes and fever despite the absence of implant breakage.

It’s important for those who have undergone bust augmentation to talk with their surgeons and ask about the brand of implants they have. If they have PIP implants, it’s necessary that they get an ultrasound six months following their breast enlargement surgery to examine leakage or deterioration of the silicone. Just in case there’s breakage, the surgeon will need to get rid of the PIP implants to protect the patient’s health against infection or harm.
